Before refrigeration, ice harvested from New England ponds was insulated with sawdust and shipped as far as India, where it sold at premium prices to colonial households. The trade depended on timing: warm winters shrank profits, while efficient rail links to ports determined whether blocks arrived intact. By the 1880s, mechanical ice plants in tropical cities reduced demand for imported blocks, transforming ice from a seasonal luxury into a locally manufactured commodity.
