The white marble of the Elgin Marbles and other classical sculptures is widely treated as the defining aesthetic of ancient Greek art. Art critics and architects since the Renaissance have drawn on this monochrome restraint as a model of ideal beauty, and the severity of unpainted stone is described as an authentic expression of the Greek artistic sensibility.

Art historian Vinzenz Brinkmann and colleagues demonstrated through UV fluorescence analysis that virtually all surviving ancient Greek and Roman marble statues were originally painted in vivid pigments including red, blue, yellow, and green. The pure white that has defined classical beauty for centuries reflects post-antique weathering and the preferences of Enlightenment-era scholars who interpreted bare stone as evidence of Greek restraint. The whiteness is a product of accident and misreading, not of any ancient design philosophy.
